1975 AIRSTREAM ARGOSY 26' MOTORHOME — OFF-GRID PROJECT
IMPORTANT INFO
1975 Airstream Argosy motorhome. 26' model / approx. 28' bumper-to-bumper. 69,480 miles, believed original. Clear title. Chevy P30 chassis, 454 V8, TH400 3-speed automatic, dual rear wheels, approx. 50-gal fuel tank. Eudora, KS. Unfinished restoration/project. TOW REQUIRED until fuel system is serviced. Sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS, no warranty.
MECHANICAL
Before the current fuel issue, 454 started, idled and sounded great, never overheated, and the transmission shifted well. I drove it a few miles about 3 months before the carb started flooding. Video of the engine running before flooding is included.
Edelbrock carburetor replaced in 2024. Fuel pump, rubber fuel hoses and starter replaced. Engine battery new Jan. 2026. Alternator charges; power steering works; brakes felt normal when last driven. No excessive steering play; no known suspension problems.
Original tank has dirty fuel. Carb recently began flooding after starting, so I stopped running it to avoid pulling more debris into the carb. Tank should be removed/refurbished, fuel lines flushed, filters replaced as needed, then carb CLEANED. I would not run it until this is done.
Valve-cover gaskets need replacement; oil residue can smoke initially when warm. Fuel gauge appears not to work. Driver-side rear brake light is out. Wipers need replacement. Other gauges/accessories as-is/untested.
PLUMBING
Off-grid plan: mainly solar, composting toilet, NO propane and NO black-water tank; gray water only.
Approx. 30-gal fresh-water tank under passenger side of rear bed holds water. New water pump installed, untested. Kitchen plumbing is roughed in; no sink or water heater. City-water inlet is locked and lock appears stuck.
Former black-tank area is now a floor hatch/storage compartment built to hold a couple hundred pounds; it could potentially become a shower.
ELECTRICAL
30-amp shore power with 120V outlets and new breaker box. Solar wiring is routed through roof; rear bed has planned space for battery/solar equipment. No house battery, inverter, converter, solar panels or permanent interior lights. Some wiring remains open because build is unfinished. Color-coded electrical plan included.
LIVING AREA
Interior gutted. All accessible rivets/seams caulked from inside. New sheep-wool insulation and aircraft-grade aluminum interior skin/walls installed. Soft subfloor areas replaced. Natural cork underlayment + LVP installed but not fully finished. No active roof leak, known water intrusion into wall cavities.
Rear bed is custom/irregular, about 70" long x 41" wide. No mattress included; I used cut-to-fit natural latex. Middle section is 2 very large drawers on wheels that slide out. Water tank/pump are under passenger side; opposite side planned for solar/battery equipment.
Brand-new driver's captain's seat. No passenger seat. Tile entry step needs grout. Refrigerator shown in some photos is NOT included. No stove, furnace, rooftop A/C, generator, toilet or other appliances.
TIRES
9.50R16.5LT tubeless radial steel-cord tires. Tread is good, but there is age-related dry rot; one tire is worse than the others. No spare; rear spare mount present. Wheels believed original.
OTHER KNOWNS
Originally painted; I removed the paint for polishing and started part of the coach. Photos show polished vs. unfinished areas.
Front cap is galvanized aluminum; rear cap is fiberglass, both original construction. Rear fiberglass damage is patched/repaired and needs final sanding/paint. Dent on driver's side. Windshield has a non-spreading chip unchanged since I bought it; rear glass also has a non-spreading chip.
Windows can admit moisture into the aluminum frames, but water stays in the frame/weep-well areas and does NOT enter the insulated wall cavities. Some windows are temporarily caulked shut; proper seals should eventually be installed. No screens. Roof itself does not leak.
Entry door is difficult to open in hot weather due to expansion/swelling; lifting while pulling helps. I've never been locked out, but it's much easier in cooler weather. Exterior storage doors open, but metal storage-compartment structure has significant rust. Visible underside rust is present, but no known structurally concerning chassis rust. Hitch present. Backup camera included, not installed.
