We purchased this 1961 Vintage Airstream Tradewind in 2013 from the second owner. The trailer was mostly original except for the removal of the linoleum flooring, toilet, and exterior protective coating.
The 24’ Tradewind is a highly desirable model, especially with the rare twin-bed rear layout and the “Door in a Door”. Most Tradewinds of this era came with the standard fold-out bed (gaucho couch) and bedroom configuration, making this setup much harder to find. At this length, it’s an ideal size for most RV parks and campsites, offering a great balance between comfort and maneuverability. The single-axle design also makes it much easier to tow (3,000 pounds) and navigate into smaller or tighter camping spots compared to larger dual-axle trailers.
The first project we tackled was removing the original gaucho couch in the front and replacing the soft subfloor in that area. We installed a floating floor throughout the trailer and custom-built a U-shaped dinette with storage that converts into a queen-size bed. We removed the original water tank, water lines, and hot water heater, replacing the plumbing with new PEX water lines.
Additional upgrades and improvements include: • Powder coated propane tanks and wheels • Replaced the original refrigerator with a Dometic 3-way refrigerator • Upgraded to a Dexter axle • Added Dometic air conditioner with heat strip • Upgraded the fan to a new Fantastic Fan • Replaced the original awning with a retractable ZipDee awning • New tires (including spare) • Replaced original curtains and curtain rods • Added leveler jacks • Replaced 30 amp electric plug
We still have the original awning, including the poles and ropes, along with all original parts we removed during the restoration process, with the exception of the gaucho couch.
There are still a few unfinished projects:• 1 kitchen countertop still needs to be installed (the butcher block countertop will be included with the sale) • Water pump • Water tank • Hot water heater • Toilet
We have camped in and enjoyed this trailer for the past 12 years, and it has been a wonderful camper for us. The only reason we are selling is because we recently upgraded to newer Airstream.
