1990 Ford E-350 "Econolion" Tailgating Ambulance 7.3L Diesel
Upon the conclusion of the 2005 Penn State Football season, I was trying to decide on the perfect tailgating vehicle. As an owner (at the time) of an old fire truck, a used ambulance quickly came to mind. With the help of a broker, I purchased this 1990 Ford Econoline (Econolion) E-350 from an Ambulance Association and drove it back from Hawarden, Iowa in February 2006. It has served me very well over the past 20 years and I have no doubt it’ll do the same for the next owner. It has been to Florida twice, South Bend(IN), Lincoln(NE), Ann Arbor(MI), Columbus(OH) a few times and to almost every home Penn State football game since I’ve owned it, a 200 mile round trip venture. It has also been in the Penn State Homecoming parade at least a dozen times. In the off-season, it occasionally serves to help friends move or to pick up bigger items from Lowes & Home Depot.
MECHANICAL: It has had its regular maintenance performed (oil and filter, fuel filter and air filter) annually and the following major repairs performed over the years: new torque converter and transmission rebuilt, new power steering gear box, new starter, new mechanical fuel pump, new lift pump, sway bar links and new glow plugs. It currently has only 124,895 miles on the legendary 7.3L diesel engine, renowned for its longevity and reliability. The tires were replaced two years ago(date code 2323) and the Interstate batteries were replaced in March 2024. During warmer weather, it starts quickly. When the colder weather hits, I usually plug in the block heater for a few hours or the night before to assist in startups. The only known issues are the right rear compartment, cruise control and on-board inverter. The compartment door has a pulley that came detached from the door itself. It will open, but it takes a little bit of effort. Thankfully, the vehicle has more than enough storage elsewhere. The inverter was used to convert the vehicle’s DC power to AC power which would allow the use of the on board 120V outlets while driving. While it was a nice feature, it is not necessary for vehicle operation. When the vehicle is plugged into a generator or house outlet, it will power all the outlets on the ambulance as well as providing a charge to the batteries. If those outlets were needed while driving to heat up a crock pot/keep it warm, use the toaster, charge devices, watch TV, etc., I would strap a generator to the back step and plug it in with an extension cord, which worked well.
APPEARANCE: A friend originally hand painted all the artwork, including the logos and it has been updated three times since for touchups and to coincide with Big 10 conference additions: Nebraska(2011), Maryland & Rutgers(2014) and the season before USC, UCLA, Oregon & Washington joined(2024). Him and I discussed the team logos during the most recent update and decided it would be best to do them in vinyl, especially if there were more conference changes down the road. In 2023, the painted ones were removed, the surface was repainted white and all new vinyl logos were applied. While vinyl isn’t as resistant to UV as paint, the logos still look pretty good today and a new, full set will be included in the event any need replaced.
EXTRAS: It comes outfitted with just about everything to make it tailgate ready: a 10x10 pop-up tent with walls, 8 chairs, PSU table, portable road-trip grill w/ stand, hose adapter for a 20lb propane cylinder, pop-up trash/recyclable can, propane heater and 20lb propane cylinder. There is also a button installed on the dash that when pushed, broadcasts the lion roar out from the front PA/siren speakers. And yes, the lights and sirens are functional, however, it is highly advisable to restrict usage to driveways, parking lots or parades.
I have a clean and clear PA motorhome title in hand along with two sets of keys. Preferred Parking Passes in Lot 13 for all 2026 regular season home games will also be included with a full price purchase. Additionally, my confidence in this vehicle is such that if the new owner has ANY issues within the first year of ownership, I will gladly return up to 10% of the purchase price via Venmo upon the receipt of any and all repair invoices. This is my personal guarantee and I will gladly put it in writing at the time of transfer. Thanks in advance for your interest!
