This vintage Dodge RV runs and drives like a dream with only 41k original miles! I am the second owner of this classic Dodge Sportsman, which spent most of its life in the high desert areas of Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado, preserving the body, frame, engine, hoses, wiring, and interior finishes (see photos of bottom of chassis)
I purchased it in 2020 and did an extensive renovation, removing the corroded and dated mechanical systems (fridge, heater, water heater, water tank, etc..), rebuilding many of the interior walls, and re-sealing the entire roof, exterior trim, and windows, and adding a new exterior paint scheme.
The interior includes re-built benches and storage areas, new seat cushions, vintage-inspired fridge, original oven/range, a vintage kitchen countertop, new kitchen sink, and rebuilt kitchen drain. All of the walls that are painted blue on the interior have been re-framed with new paneling. All wooden surfaces on the interior have been re-oiled and conditioned for a beautiful vintage glow. There is a ton of storage area above and below the kitchen cabinets, under the benches, in a rear wall compartment and an actual closet with hanging rod.
The bathroom was completely gutted and replaced with a new sloped floor, toilet, shower drain, and full-room waterproofed shower setup. Under one the rear benches is a brand-new water tank that is ready to be hooked up. The two large waste holding tanks (one for kitchen and one for bathroom) have been clean and unused for five years.
There is a full-size mattress sleeping area over the cab with a large storage tote, and the rear booth seating area is huge as the table and cushions fold down to form a king-size mattress.
The RV also had a full mechanical overhaul including:
Rebuilt carburetor, new radiator, water pump, timing chain, distributer, starter, spark plug wires, master cylinder, muffler, thermostat, ignition switch, upper and lower ball joints, battery, ballast resistor, voltage regulator, signal switch, ignition control module, coil, and relay. The timing cam sprocket that was removed had very little wear, indicating that there has been very little stress on the engine. Also includes and after-market back-up camera and Bluetooth stereo.
The engine is a 5.9L Dodge Mopar small block V8 360 with double-barrel carburetor. Automatic transmission. It runs great and passed an emission test in Portland in 2021.
It also has cruise control(!) and an air conditioning setup (needs to be re-charged).
The whole set of tires (6) were replaced in 2020 and have only been driven less than 2,000 miles.
It also has a 2" hitch on the bumper and is rated for towing ~5,000lbs.
PLEASE READ: The RV has been covered and parked in Portland for the past four years where I used it as a spare space for guest. It has worked great for me, and I haven’t seen any evidence of leaks in the roof or windows in that time . It has also been covered most of the time (comes with a full cover!). Since it was parked next to the house, we didn’t need to finish out the plumbing and electrical systems to use it, thus the remaining work that would need to be done to make it fully functional includes:
- Plumbing: All the existing plumbing supply piping was removed because it consisted of copper pipes which had all corroded. To finish the plumbing system you will need to install a water tank fill line, water pump, piping, water heater (if desired), kitchen faucet, and water supply to sink, toilet, and shower
- Electrical: The original fuse box had water damage from the old water heater that was removed. All the wiring in the exposed walls was checked and verified before the walls were replaced. The RV has four 120v grounded outlets, wired directly to an extension cord connection; two on the kitchen countertop, one in the bathroom, and another below the table. To finish the electrical system you would need to install a new fuse box, house batteries, power connection, battery charger, and inverter (if desired)
- The original stove/range was barely used and just needs to be re-connected to the propane tank.
- Add heat source (if desired)
This is a great project for anyone that wants to add the final touches to a vintage RV project without having to put in all the elbow grease. Or just throw a water container on the countertop and it is all ready to go for your next adventure, to use as an Airbnb, or as extra space for guests!
Clean title from Colorado, has not been titled or registered in Oregon yet. Would need to schedule a VIN inspection with Oregon DMV.
